Hello, my name is Steve Hart, and welcome to my personal website that has no real purpose other than being a place to share stuff I enjoy producing. If my ‘content’ provides a welcome distraction from what you should be doing then my job is done.
But what about me? Well, to paraphrase a line from a popular 1982 rap song, ‘I was born a long time ago, and now I’m lucky enough to be here with you’. To which the child on the record rightly asks – ‘but what happened in between?’ Well, it pretty much went like this…
Short story: Born in the UK, spent 10 years as a nightclub DJ and radio presenter before switching to working as a journalist, rising to editor. Moved to Auckland, New Zealand, to join the New Zealand Herald, and now I’m getting up to mischief in Australia.
Long boring story:
I’m an experienced multimedia journalist and content producer with a career spanning traditional print media, online, radio broadcasting, podcasting, and video production.
My work includes writing news and feature articles, producing and hosting syndicated radio shows, recording voiceovers, and creating video content.
My media career began in 1980 as a professional beat-mixing DJ. This exciting chapter evolved into working both on-air and behind the scenes at commercial and BBC radio stations.
I entered print journalism, joining my local weekly, quickly progressing to senior journalist, section editor, chief sub editor, and eventually deputy editor overseeing 14 regional newspapers. Total weekly print run was 1 million copies across Essex. For a few years I was club DJ by night and mild-mannered reporter by day.
I contributed as a freelance journalist and researcher to Private Eye, News of the World, Daily Mirror, and Thames News (TV).
Before relocating to New Zealand in 2000, I was managing editor at Barkers Trident Communications, a contract publishing firm in London.
Upon joining The New Zealand Herald, I served in several editorial roles including chief sub editor of the daily business section, travel editor, careers section editor, and managing editor of NZME’s commercial publications.
As a freelancer in New Zealand, I contributed to numerous consumer and B2B publications, primarily covering business, employment, investing, photography, and engineering. I also served as editor of Herald Homes.
I launched my first podcast in 2008, focusing on the New Zealand sharemarket, and later authored the popular Podcasting Made Easy book.
My entrepreneurial projects include launching Viewfinder – a magazine for hobby filmmakers – running a membership site for freelance journalists in New Zealand, and a YouTube channel.
